There are over 2000 miles of navigable canals in the UK. Many are linked by rivers and may require a specific license in order to use them. It is also worth noting that not all are navigable by wide beamed craft (the map above shows broad canals in red) so if you wish to cruise the entire network, choose your boat carefully. Many canals are under restoration, but as ever, the work often appears to proceed at a snail’s pace due to a lack of funds and resources.
